Greenwich & West Village

Manhattan

Where it is. Greenwich Village and the West Village sit on Manhattan’s West Side between 14th Street and Houston Street, from about Broadway west to the Hudson River, with Washington Square Park near the center. The 1 stops at Christopher Street, the A, B, C, D, E, F and M meet at West 4th Street, the L runs along 14th Street and PATH trains run to New Jersey.

Everyday life. Bleecker Street, Hudson Street, Carmine Street and Greenwich Avenue are lined with restaurants, cafés and small shops, and the side streets west of Seventh Avenue are quiet and tree-lined. Hudson River Park runs along the water, with piers for walking, sports and sitting in the sun.

The homes. Rentals make up about four in ten homes, almost all in prewar buildings, and co-ops close to three in ten. Condos make up about one in six homes, and nearly 700 townhouses and rowhouses line the side streets, many in the Greenwich Village Historic District.

Standouts. Washington Square Park, with its marble arch, is surrounded by New York University. The Jefferson Market Library on Sixth Avenue and the Stonewall National Monument on Christopher Street are here too.
