Chelsea

Manhattan

Where it is. Chelsea is on Manhattan’s West Side, roughly between 14th and 34th Streets from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, with Hudson Yards at its northern end. The 1, A, C, E and L trains stop in the neighborhood, with the F and M along its eastern edge and the 7 at Hudson Yards.

Everyday life. Eighth and Ninth Avenues are the main streets for restaurants, cafés and shops, and 23rd Street runs across the middle. The High Line, an elevated park built on an old rail line, runs through West Chelsea, and Hudson River Park follows the waterfront.

The homes. More than half of Chelsea’s homes are in rental buildings, most of them prewar. Condos make up about a quarter, many near the High Line, and co-ops about a sixth, including the large Penn South co-op on Eighth Avenue. A few hundred brownstones and rowhouses sit on the side streets of the West 20s.

Standouts. Chelsea Market fills a former factory on Ninth Avenue, and the blocks between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in the West 20s hold dozens of art galleries. Chelsea Piers, on the river, has sports facilities, an ice rink and a golf driving range.
