East Village
Manhattan
Where it is. The East Village is on Manhattan’s East Side, between 14th Street and Houston Street, from the Bowery and Third Avenue east to the East River, including Alphabet City along Avenues A through D. The L runs across 14th Street, the 6 stops at Astor Place and the F stops at Second Avenue.
Everyday life. St. Marks Place, Avenue A and First and Second Avenues are lined with restaurants, bars, cafés and small shops, and most errands happen on foot. The side streets are mostly low walk-up buildings, with dozens of community gardens tucked between them.
The homes. About three in four homes are rentals, almost all in prewar walk-up buildings. Co-ops make up about one in seven homes and condos about one in eleven, many of them in newer buildings.
Standouts. Tompkins Square Park, between Avenues A and B, has dog runs, playgrounds and a weekend farmers market. Off-Broadway theaters such as New York Theatre Workshop and La MaMa are here, and McSorley’s Old Ale House has been pouring since 1854.
