Upper West Side
Manhattan
Where it is. The Upper West Side stretches from 59th Street to 110th Street between Central Park and the Hudson River, with Lincoln Square at its southern end and Manhattan Valley to the north. The 1, 2 and 3 run under Broadway, and the B and C stop along Central Park West.
Everyday life. Broadway, Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue carry most of the restaurants, cafés and shops, and food stores like Zabar’s line Broadway. Riverside Park and the Hudson River Greenway run the length of the west side, with Central Park to the east.
The homes. Rentals make up a little under half of homes, nearly all in prewar buildings. Condos and co-ops each make up about a quarter, from the large prewar co-ops of Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive to newer condos near Lincoln Center. Brownstones fill many side streets in the West 70s and 80s.
Standouts. Lincoln Center anchors the south end, and the American Museum of Natural History faces Central Park West.
