Upper East Side

Manhattan

Where it is. The Upper East Side runs from 59th Street to 96th Street between Central Park and the East River, taking in Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill and Yorkville. The 4, 5 and 6 run under Lexington Avenue, and the Q runs under Second Avenue, with stops at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets.

Everyday life. Lexington, Second and Third Avenues are lined with everyday restaurants, grocers and shops, and Madison Avenue is known for boutiques and galleries. Central Park runs along the west side, and Carl Schurz Park and the East River Esplanade follow the water.

The homes. Rentals make up a little under half of homes and co-ops more than a third, from prewar doorman buildings on Fifth, Park and Madison Avenues to postwar towers farther east. Condos make up about one in six homes, and more than a thousand townhouses line the side streets.

Standouts. Museum Mile along Fifth Avenue includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim and the Neue Galerie. Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s residence, sits in Carl Schurz Park.
