Neighborhood GuideNassau County
Great Neck
Nassau County
Where it is. Great Neck is a peninsula on Long Island’s North Shore, just across the line from Queens, made up of nine villages, including Great Neck Plaza, Kings Point and Great Neck Estates, plus unincorporated areas. The LIRR Port Washington branch stops at Great Neck station, in Great Neck Plaza.
Everyday life. Middle Neck Road is the main street, with restaurants, cafés, bakeries and shops, and the blocks around the station in Great Neck Plaza are the busiest. The Great Neck Park District runs pools, rinks and parks across the peninsula.
The homes. A little under six in ten homes are detached single-family houses, and more than a third are in apartment and co-op buildings, more than in most of Nassau, many of them in Great Neck Plaza. About three in four homes are owner-occupied.
Standouts. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy sits on the water in Kings Point, and Steppingstone Park looks out over Long Island Sound. The Great Neck Union Free School District runs two high schools, North and South.
