Neighborhood GuideNassau County
Merrick
Nassau County
Where it is. Merrick is on the South Shore of Nassau County, in the Town of Hempstead, between Freeport and Bellmore, with canals running south toward the bay. The LIRR Babylon branch stops at Merrick station, along Sunrise Highway.
Everyday life. Merrick Road and Merrick Avenue are the main streets for shops and restaurants, and Sunrise Highway carries most of the traffic east and west. Most residents drive for daily errands, and Jones Beach is a short drive away.
The homes. Nearly all homes are detached single-family houses, about 96 percent, and about 97 percent are owner-occupied. South of Merrick Road, many homes sit on canals with direct water access.
Standouts. Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve, a former landfill turned nature preserve, has walking trails and views across the bay to the city skyline. Children attend the Merrick Union Free School District through sixth grade, then the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.
