Jackson Heights

Queens

Where it is. Jackson Heights is in north-central Queens, just south of LaGuardia Airport. The E, F, M and R trains and the elevated 7 meet at the 74th Street–Broadway station, one of the main transfer hubs in Queens.

Everyday life. Daily life centers on 37th Avenue, 74th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, which are lined with shops, bakeries and restaurants. 74th Street is known for its South Asian shops, and the 34th Avenue Open Street turns 26 blocks into a car-free route for walking, running and biking.

The homes. Homes are split almost evenly between co-ops, rental apartment buildings and one- to three-family houses. Most of the co-ops are prewar, including the 1910s and 1920s garden co-ops built around large private courtyards, and there are a small number of condo buildings.

Standouts. The Jackson Heights Historic District, roughly between Roosevelt Avenue and 34th Avenue from 76th to 88th Streets, was one of the first planned garden communities in the country. Travers Park, on 34th Avenue, hosts a Sunday farmers market.
