Garden City
Nassau County
Where it is. Garden City is a village in central Nassau County, laid out in 1869 by the merchant A.T. Stewart as one of the first planned communities in the country. The LIRR Hempstead branch serves the village at Garden City, Nassau Boulevard and Stewart Manor stations.
Everyday life. Seventh Street is the village’s main street for shops and restaurants, and Franklin Avenue has more stores and offices. Roosevelt Field, one of the largest malls on Long Island, is just to the east.
The homes. Most homes are detached single-family houses, about 83 percent, on wide, tree-lined streets, and about 94 percent are owner-occupied. The rest are mostly in apartment and co-op buildings.
Standouts. The Cathedral of the Incarnation, finished in 1885, anchors the village center, and Adelphi University’s campus is in the south of the village. The Garden City Union Free School District serves the village.
