Forest Hills
Queens
Where it is. Forest Hills is in central Queens, along Queens Boulevard between Rego Park and Kew Gardens, with Forest Park to the south and Flushing Meadows Corona Park to the north. The express E and F trains stop at 71st Avenue, and the LIRR stops at its own station by Forest Hills Gardens.
Everyday life. Daily life centers on Austin Street, the main shopping street, and Queens Boulevard, with more restaurants along Metropolitan Avenue. Away from the main roads, the streets are quiet, tree-lined and residential.
The homes. Co-ops are the largest share, about four in ten homes, mostly in apartment buildings put up after World War II. Rentals make up about a quarter and condos about one in ten. The rest are one- to three-family houses, from the Tudor and Arts-and-Crafts homes of Forest Hills Gardens to the detached homes of Cord Meyer.
Standouts. Forest Hills Gardens is a private, planned community from the 1910s, with Tudor-style homes and Station Square by the LIRR. The West Side Tennis Club’s Forest Hills Stadium hosts summer concerts, and Forest Park has trails, a golf course and horseback riding.
